Improve Your Patent Search Experience

Most patent search tools are purely utilitarian. They provide access to patent documents in a database but do very little to make searching a pleasurable experience. LexisNexis® IP designs its products with its users in mind. That is why the LexisNexis TotalPatent One® patent search platform is not only intuitive and visually appealing, it also comes with many features that make patent searches easier and more enjoyable.

Intuitive Patent Searching

If we are all being honest with ourselves, the patent search engines provided by most global patent authorities are a bit … clunky. They are designed to get the job done, but they often require a working knowledge of Boolean logic and operators. Moreover, they rarely include features designed to simplify the patent search process. The TotalPatent One® patent search platform, on the other hand, was designed with the user in mind. TotalPatent One offers object searches in addition to Boolean searches, which allow users to intuitively build their search queries without the need to learn the nuances of Boolean logic.

Many Patent Databases in One

With the exception of the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) PATENTSCOPE database, most patent authority databases only contain patent documents for the country they represent. This means that a comprehensive global patent search that includes patent documents from heavy hitters like the United States, China and Korea requires searching several patent databases separately. TotalPatent One remedies this problem and helps its users save time on patent searches by providing them with access to over 110 million full-text patent documents from over 100 patent authorities across the globe, all from a single patent search platform.

Patent Document Previews

Patent search results provided by most patent search tools display little more than a patent title and patent identification numbers—it is up to the user to click through links to each resulting patent document to determine how relevant it is to the user’s query. TotalPatent One is different from other patent search platforms in that it allows users to preview document images, bibliographic information, content summaries and many other useful types of information without leaving the search results page.

Customised Document Views

As if being able to easily preview patent documents was not a big enough advantage over most patent search platforms, TotalPatent One users also have complete control over the information that is displayed when viewing a patent document. Users can simply click the action button in their TotalPatent One menu bar, and they will be presented with the option to customize the patent document’s appearance. A list of document sections will be displayed, and users can then choose to include or exclude specific sections by ticking or unticking the corresponding check boxes.

Patent Search Filters

Many patent professionals use broad patent searches as a starting point to understand the general patent landscape surrounding an invention. While broad searches are useful, they usually result in more search results than can be evaluated in a reasonable amount of time. When users run a broad patent search, they are presented with several pie charts along with their list of results. Each pie chart communicates the breakdown of specific information about the search results, such as the prevalence of the most common Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) codes used or the most common assignees. Users can interact directly with TotalPatent One charts by selecting one or more pie chart segments to filter the patent documents shown in their search results.

Digital File Management

A major drawback of many patent search tools is that there is no way to save and organize information within the platform. When TotalPatent One users run a search query, they can save patent documents to online files to help with their project management. TotalPatent One files can even be used to print the contents of an entire patent portfolio, or to export file information in a variety of digital formats.

Query and Publication Alerts

For anyone tired of consistently running the same search to see if new information has been

posted, TotalPatent One can shoulder that burden. TotalPatent One allows users to set two different types of alerts for passive patent monitoring. Users can either set alerts for specific search queries, which will alert them anytime new documents or updated documents appear within the parameters of the search, or they can set alerts for whenever individual patent documents are updated. Either way, that means less time spent monitoring patent databases so time can be better spent on other things.

LexisNexis IP products are designed around their users. After identifying many of the problems with other patent search tools that complicate the patent search process, we have created simple and effective solutions for better results. The TotalPatent One patent search platform is loaded with user-oriented features and has been specifically designed for a superior user experience.
