Deep learning is a subset of machine learning: both technologies fall under the umbrella of artificial intelligence. While artificial intelligence can be broadly defined as the programming of machines to act and think in the same way as humans, deep learning takes this mimicry a step further. Deep learning machines are built to mirror the neural networks of a human brain.

These artificial neural nodes are interconnected in a layered, hierarchical web. Algorithms are stacked, with one algorithm lifting a certain aspect of the data which is then fed into the next algorithm, lifting another feature. A deep neural network can have as many as 150 “layers”. Data progresses through this hierarchical structure, and by example, the deep learning dataset learns to accurately and quickly draw insights.
